Angha Ashar — A Neighbourhood Durga Puja

Angha Ashar is a community Durga Puja in Kolkata, organised by local residents on the barowari (public) model. The name reflects a neighbourhood club identity, one of many that sustain the city's autumn festival at the para level.

Like other small community pujas, Angha Ashar follows the traditional five-day worship calendar, installs a clay idol crafted in the city's Kumartuli artist quarter, and closes with the immersion of the goddess on Vijaya Dashami. These intimate celebrations are the foundation of Kolkata's Durga Puja, now recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
