United Circus Puja
About United Circus Puja
United Circus Puja — A Kolkata Community Durga Puja
United Circus Puja is a community Durga Puja in Kolkata, organised by local residents on the barowari (public) model. Clubs bearing "United" in their name are common across the city's paras, reflecting the cooperative organisation of neighbourhood worship.
The celebration follows the traditional five-day calendar — from the khuti puja that opens preparations, through installation of a Kumartuli-made clay idol, to the worship of Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and the immersion on Vijaya Dashami. Such pujas are the neighbourhood-level foundation of Kolkata's Durga Puja, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
- Run by a local residents' committee.
- Traditional rituals across the five main days.
- Community cultural events and bhog.
United Circus Puja continues the city's enduring tradition of welcoming the goddess as a guest of the entire neighbourhood.
