United Club, Baguiati — Rail Pukur's Community Puja
United Club, popularly known as Baguiati Rail Pukur United Club, is a long-standing community Durga Puja on the eastern fringe of Kolkata. Founded in 1951, the club sits on about 2.5 bighas of land around the neighbourhood's beloved Rail Pukur pond and a children's park, just two minutes from the VIP Road in Baguiati — a locality that serves the Greater Kolkata belt of Dum Dum Park, Bangur and Rajarhat New Town.
The club has organised its grand annual Durgotsav for more than seven decades and is covered by leading Bengali and English media. Its 72nd Durga Puja in 2025 carried the theme 'Shabdo' (The Sound): a meditation on the vanishing sounds of nature — birdsong, rustling leaves, the rhythms of rain — drowned out by urban growth. The pandal featured a striking 20-foot bird installation, immersive soundscapes and mime performances voicing the silent plea of disappearing species, virtually inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
- Founded: 1951 (72nd puja in 2025).
- Location: Baguiati, near VIP Road, Greater Kolkata.
- Earlier theme: the 70th-anniversary 'Aparajit' celebrated jute weaving and eco-consciousness with a plant-based idol.
- Community role: annual sports, blood-donation camps, cultural functions and local awards.
Blending art, music and devotion, United Club remains a cornerstone of Baguiati's festival identity — a people's puja that pairs spectacle with a social message.
