Ballygunge 21 Pally Sarbojanin — A Freedom-Year Legacy

Ballygunge Ekush (21) Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity was founded in 1947, the year of India’s independence, when a group of eminent citizens — including painter Jamini Roy and Dr R. Ahmed — came together to celebrate Durga Puja at Ballygunge Phari. The club completed its 77th year in 2023 and remains among the top pujas of Ballygunge.

21 Pally is noted as much for its social work as for its pandal. The committee runs eye camps and distributes spectacles free of charge, and has taken part in the Red Road Biswa Bangla carnivals. Its 2023 theme, “Echoes of Eternity,” paired the timeless connection between humanity and the divine with art exhibitions and community workshops, while tree-plantation and waste-management drives reflected a growing environmental conscience.

True to its founding spirit, the puja blends tradition with social consciousness — a living legacy where faith meets culture and the neighbourhood gathers as one. Beyond the pandal, the club organises blood-donation and health camps through the year, embedding the festival in a broader rhythm of service rather than confining it to five autumnal days.

Set near Patha Bhavan on Bondel Road, 21 Pally is easy to combine with the Ballygunge Park and Hindusthan Park clusters. Its longevity is no accident: a puja born in the optimism of 1947 has quietly become a model of how a community celebration can carry both memory and responsibility forward, generation after generation.
