Bosepukur Sitala Mandir — The Club That Invented the Theme Puja

Bosepukur Sitala Mandir Durgotsab Committee, established in 1950 at 1/27 Bosepukur Road, Tal Bagan (Kasba), is credited with launching Kolkata’s theme-based Durga Puja movement in 2001 — a year its pandal used some 900,000 clay cups. That single idea reshaped how the entire city celebrates the festival.

The club is a pioneer of eco-friendly construction, favouring bamboo, jute and clay over synthetic materials, and its recent themes have been quietly conceptual: “Shanchoy” (Savings, 2024, built around earthen pots and the traditional “lakhi bhandar”), “Kaal Rokhon” (Time Preservation, 2025), and for its 77th year in 2026, “Dhwongsho” (Destruction) — conceived by Tushar Kanti Pradhan as the idea that destruction is never an end but the beginning of new creation.

Though sometimes listed among bonedi/community classifications, Bosepukur is best understood as a theme-puja innovator: a community club that turned the pandal into a medium for ideas, earning national attention while staying rooted in Kasba’s neighbourhood life. Its commitment to natural materials gives the installations an earthy integrity that photographs cannot fully convey.
