About Pragati

Pragati Sangha — A Kolkata Community Durga Puja

Pragati Sangha is a community Durga Puja in South Kolkata, Kolkata, organised under the banner of "Pragati" (meaning "progress"). Like hundreds of neighbourhood clubs across the city, it brings residents together to install and worship the goddess Durga during the autumn festival.

Community pujas such as Pragati Sangha embody the barowari ideal — a public, inclusive celebration funded and run by local contribution. Over the years many such clubs have moved toward thematic pandals, while others preserve traditional idol forms and rituals.

  • The puja is organised by a local residents' committee.
  • Worship follows the five-day Shashthi-to-Dashami calendar.
  • Cultural events and community bhogs mark the festival.

Pragati Sangha forms part of the vast, neighbourhood-level fabric of Kolkata's Durga Puja, celebrated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
