About Selimpur Pally Sarbojanin
Selimpur Pally Sarbojanin — A Heritage Puja of Dhakuria
Selimpur Pally Sarbojanin is one of the best-known heritage Durga Pujas of South Kolkata, long a centre of festive gravity in the Dhakuria–Selimpur belt. Its sprawling pandals, dressed with paintings, festive lighting and sculpture, draw visitors from across the city each year and anchor the neighbourhood’s autumn calendar.
The club is as much about community as spectacle. During the festival it hosts food stalls serving beloved Bengali dishes, and its grand Vijaya Dashami procession — marking the festival’s final day — is a local highlight that brings out residents in numbers. For generations the puja has been a fixture of neighbourhood life near Jadavpur Thana.
True to its heritage status, Selimpur Pally balances scale with tradition: a devotional idol at the centre, a generous pandal around it, and the easy, collective joy that defines a South Kolkata para puja. The committee’s consistent investment in decoration and crowd experience has kept the puja relevant even as newer, louder installations have appeared nearby. Families plan their Ashtami evening around it, and the lanes fill with the particular energy only a heritage para can generate.
For visitors, Selimpur Pally offers the comfort of the familiar done well — a large, warm, community-owned celebration where the emphasis is on gathering rather than gimmick. It remains a dependable, satisfying stop on any Dhakuria pandal route, and a reminder of why the older para pujas still matter.
