Shibamandir

Shibamandir — A Lake Area Community Durga Puja

Shibamandir is a community (barowari/sarbojanin) Durga Puja in South Kolkata, Kolkata, organised by local residents who come together each autumn to worship the goddess Durga. Like thousands of neighbourhood pujas across Kolkata, it transforms a stretch of street or open ground into a pandal where the idol is installed and worshipped from Maha Shashthi to Vijaya Dashami.

In 2025 the club presented the theme "Bishohori", reflecting a devotional, goddess-centric concept for the year's decoration and idol styling. Community pujas such as Shibamandir are the living core of Kolkata's Durga Puja, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

• The puja is organised entirely by local volunteers and residents.
• Idol worship follows the traditional five-day calendar of Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami.
• Cultural programmes, bhogs and community gatherings accompany the rituals.

Shibamandir continues the barowari spirit — the idea that the goddess belongs to everyone, and that devotion is strongest when a neighbourhood celebrates together.
