Suruchi Sangha — Thematic Storytelling in New Alipore

Suruchi Sangha is a well-known community Durga Puja of New Alipore in south Kolkata, founded in 1952. The club has a long tradition of thematic, often socially conscious pandals that turn the festival into a medium for storytelling and message-making, and it is a regular name on lists of the city's must-visit pujas. Its New Alipore grounds make it a convenient and popular halt on the southern pandal-hopping circuit.

Suruchi Sangha's strength lies in narrative pandals: the 2024 and 2025 editions continued its habit of choosing a single strong concept and building the entire pandal, idol framing and lighting around it. The 2025 theme was Aahuti. Over the years the club has been recognised among Kolkata's notable pujas for innovation and craft, and its presentations often carry a social or cultural message alongside the devotional core. The festival here is celebrated in the established sequence — from the Mahalaya invocation to the Dashami immersion — but the club's emphasis on a coherent annual concept is what distinguishes it. Like the wider barowari movement, which UNESCO recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019, Suruchi Sangha treats the five days of Durga Puja as a communal art project, drawing both local families and visitors from across the city to its gates each evening.
