Vivekananda Sporting Club, Haridevpur — Community Puja with a Creative Edge
Haridevpur Vivekananda Sporting Club is a long-standing community Durga Puja committee based at 130 Mahatma Gandhi Road, in the Arobindo Pally / Paschim Putiary (Haridevpur) area of South Kolkata, close to Netaji Metro station and the Tollygunge transport hub. The club has been a familiar name in the local puja map for decades, prized less for scale than for its heartfelt, community-centred celebrations.
In 2025 the club marked its 60th year of Durga Puja with the theme “Tanabana” (roughly, “the weave”). The pandal depicted how the traditional Benarasi saree is crafted — tracing the journey of the saree from its earliest forms to the present — translating a textile heritage into pandal artistry. The effort won the committee recognition in the “Sharad Sera-10” honours that year.
Vivekananda Sporting is typical of the Haridevpur–Paschim Putiary belt: a neighbourhood club that doubles as a year-round social and sporting space, then throws its energy into Durga Puja. Visitors note the delicate, detail-oriented artwork and the warmth of the crowd management, with the organisers emphasising safe parking, clean facilities and smooth darshan for the thousands who come to see the idol.
