About Ahiritola Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity Kolkata

Ahiritola Sarbojanin Durgotsab — Heritage by the Ghat

Ahiritola Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity, celebrating over a century of community puja from 55 B.K. Pal Avenue Road near Ahiritola Ghat, is one of North Kolkata's most prestigious and artistic Durga Pujas. Its direct link to the historic Ahiritola Ghat—where clay for idols is sourced and where immersions end—gives the puja a powerful cyclical symbolism.

The committee is celebrated for heritage-inspired, innovative themes rooted in the history of old North Kolkata. In 2024, "Khēyāl Setu Vaitaraṇī" (concept by artist Anirbān Das) recreated the nostalgia of the ghat, its theatre lanes and colonial architecture as a "bridge across memory." Past themes have evoked the stately mansions and artistic ironwork of the neighbourhood, reviving its old-world charm.

Each year the pandal becomes a living museum of Ahiritola's identity—blending nostalgia, craft and contemporary art—and the puja remains a must-visit for heritage enthusiasts and locals alike, sparking conversations about preserving the city's roots.
