About Baghbazar (Bagbazar) Sarbojanin Durgotsav and Exhibition – A Legacy Since 1919

Bagbazar (Bagbazar) Sarbojanin Durgotsav and Exhibition

Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav, first celebrated in 1919, is among the oldest community pujas of Kolkata and a cornerstone of the city's sabeki (traditional) Durga Puja heritage. Located on Bagbazar Street in North Kolkata, the puja is famed as much for its carefully curated cultural exhibition as for its idol and pandal.

True to its bonedi (traditional household) lineage, Bagbazar favours an understated, classical aesthetic over overt spectacle. The 2025 celebration continued this tradition, and the committee announced a Traditional sabeki theme for 2026, underscoring continuity with a century-old idiom. The goddess here is worshipped in a recognisably old-Kolkata style, with the pratima following classical proportions and the pandal built from bamboo, cloth and wood rather than industrial set-pieces.

The annual exhibition of paintings, crafts and curios beside the pandal has been a Bagbazar signature for decades, drawing students, artists and families. The nearby Bagbazar Ghat on the Hooghly adds to the old-world setting. Shobhabazar Sutanuti and Bagbazar railway stations are the closest transit points. For visitors seeking the "original" flavour of Kolkata's puja rather than the theme-park pandals, Bagbazar remains essential.
