About Hatibagan Nabinpally Sarbojanin Durgotsav

Hatibagan Nabin Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsav — Theatre, Literature, Freedom

Established in 1934, Hatibagan Nabin Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsav is a creative, community-driven puja at 11/1D Ganendra Mitra Lane, Hatibagan, opposite the locality's KFC and Pizza Hut. Though rooted in North Kolkata's traditional puja culture, it is best known for transforming history, literature and social conscience into immersive neighbourhood art installations.

Its recent themes have been bold and imaginative. In 2023 it turned the area into a fantasy landscape based on Sukumar Ray's centenary work "Abol Tabol". In 2024, "Theatre Para" recreated old Calcutta's theatre halls—Noti Binodini and Rangana—with retro posters, facades and nightly live plays reviving the golden era of Bengali theatre. In 2025 the theme "Amar Desh, Amar Durga" (My Country, My Durga) paid tribute to women freedom fighters of the Quit India Movement.

Past installations have ranged from international truck art to Rajasthan's Kawad art. By turning entire streets into experiential artworks, Hatibagan Nabin Pally has become one of North Kolkata's most original and community-rooted pujas, sparking city-wide curiosity each autumn.
