Jagat Mukherjee Park Durga Puja — Imagination in North Kolkata

Jagat Mukherjee Park Durga Puja, organised by Ward No. 1 Sadharan Durgotsav O Pradarshani near Sovabazar, was established in 1936 and is today in its late 80s. Over the years it has built a reputation for daring, idea-driven themes that turn the pandal into a commentary on contemporary life.

In 2025 the puja, in its 89th year, presented "Artificial Intelligence: Boon or Bane," designed by artist Subal Pal. The pandal resembled a giant time machine transporting visitors to a robotic, sky-less cityscape, with the traditional idol of Durga slaying a Mahishasura reimagined as the darker face of AI—manipulation, dependence and loss of control. The committee framed it as a spiritual plea to use technology wisely.

Jagat Mukherjee Park's history of imaginative themes—ranging from the Bongaon local train to underwater metro routes—has repeatedly surprised pandal-hoppers. By making art a mirror to pressing global issues, the puja continues North Kolkata's tradition of blending creativity with cultural critique.
