Sovabazar Beniatola Durga Puja — Tradition in Shobhabazar
The Sovabazar–Beniatola Durga Puja is a long-standing North Kolkata community puja held on Beniatola Street in Shobhabazar, a short walk from Shobhabazar Sutanuti Metro. Rooted in the neighbourhood's dense web of traditional para pujas, it is cherished for its sabeki character and intimate community feel.
The committee is known for a traditional idol and pandal styled like the old houses of Kolkata. In 2022 it drew attention for installing a roughly 11-foot, one-tonne Ashtadhatu (eight-metal) Durga idol—an unusual and striking devotion that highlighted the puja's craft traditions. The 2025 celebrations continued in a traditional vein.
As one of the cultural landmarks of Shobhabazar, Sovabazar Beniatola keeps alive the understated, hereditary flavour of North Kolkata Durga Puja, where ritual, neighbourliness and heritage matter as much as spectacle.
