About Telenga Bagan

Telengabagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab — North Kolkata's Theme Pioneer

Telengabagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab is one of North Kolkata's most respected community (sarbojanin) Durga Pujas, organised from the Telengabagan locality of Ultadanga. The puja was started in 1966 under the Ultadanga Durgotsav Sarbojanin Committee and was renamed the Telengabagan Durgotsav Committee in 1990, the year it formally embraced the theme-puja format.

Local chroniclers credit Telengabagan with pioneering the tradition of theme pujas in north Kolkata. Its 1990 pandal — conceived as a Durga temple surrounded by water — became an instant hit, drawing visitors from across the city and Bengal. Over the decades the club has explored a remarkably varied set of concepts: a Tibetan and Buddhist-inspired mandap built around the ritual offering of 'Torma' in 2022, and socially reflective themes in later years such as 'Achlaitan' (mobility) and installations echoing poet Sukanta Bhattacharya's lines on a hunger-stricken world.

  • Location: 36/C/11 Biplabi Barin Ghosh Sarani (Surir Bagan), Ultadanga, Kolkata 700067.
  • Established: 1967 (as Telengabagan Sarbojanin).
  • Zone: North Kolkata, close to Shyambazar and Girish Park metro stations.
  • Signature: Art-led, socially conscious pandals that balance heritage with contemporary narrative.

Every autumn the narrow lanes of Telengabagan fill with pandal-hoppers drawn by the club's reputation for imaginative, meaningful design — a neighbourhood puja that helped shape the modern north-Kolkata Durga Puja map.
